The second graders are welcoming in the 2009 New Year by setting goals for things they want to learn and achieve this year. They will be reading stories in their anthologies following the theme of teamwork. These stories will help expand the children’s understanding of fairness and cooperation. Their teamwork skills will be applied in science while they work in groups, using process skills for making models of a food chain. They’ll be collecting and interpreting data on how animals protect themselves. The Great Body Shop will be focusing on why exercise is important to our health. We’ll even be predicting and counting how many jumping jacks we can do in one minute.

The children will be reviewing their skip counting by
ones, fives, and tens, through hands-on activities using coins. Recognizing and counting pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and half dollars will be our next unit in math. The children will learn all the different combinations of coins that will make twenty-five cents, a half dollar, and a dollar. The concept of counting money, buying items, and learning how much change we will need to get back is a challenging and necessary life skill.

Winter writing will be focusing on using sequence words,
acrostic poems, and adding more details through vivid verbs and descriptive adjectives.

May 2009 bring all our second grade students and their families a very Happy and Healthy New Y
ear!
