ESL Family Nights
Bring Learning to Life

Two recent evening programs offered meaningful opportunities and educational support for Hicksville Public Schools' English as Second Language students and their families.

Curious George headlined a recent ESL family learning event at Old Country Road Elementary School where families of 24 participating OCR students, including parents, siblings, and grandparents joined in an evening of fun, educational, and tasty language acquisition activities. Led by OCR ESL teacher Lucy Vieco, and supported by the Hicksville Public Library, who donated over 25 books for ESL families to take home after the event, and by OCR's PTA who donated the evening's refreshments, participating families learned how simple and fun home activities can be used as important opportunities for building language, reading, math, and decoding skills. Through a multi-media approach, and with the aid of interpreters, common ground was established among the four represented languages for a reading of the donated Curious George books, the creation of a take-home craft and an edible Curious George cupcake. Students also received a Curious George activity pack to extend the learning into the home after the event. Fourteen OCR teachers donated their time to support the event, including decorating the all-purpose room in a Curious George theme.

Lee Avenue parents recently participated in an educational evening led by ESL teacher Ann LeBarbera. In this workshop, also presented with a multi-media approach, parents learned simple ways to improve their children's language acquisition skills using items from their own home including cereal boxes, magazines and newspapers. A demonstration of books-on-tape was given to the attending students and parents culminating in the loan of a tape recorder and learning-level appropriate books with tapes to each attending family.
