Hispanic Heritage Month

In conjunction with Hispanic Heritage month, middle school librarian Patricia Bergmann (right) and Spanish teacher Claire Chotiner (left) arranged for students at the Hicksville Middle School to receive copies of El Diario, the Spanish language newspaper, to use in their Spanish classes. Researched and coordinated by Ms. Bergmann, El Diario, is just one of the educational resource materials provided free to enrolled schools by the New York Times in celebration of Hispanic Heritage month. Eighth grade Spanish students in Ms. Chotiner's class received copies of the newspaper along with a series of questions she designed for them to answer from the newspaper stories. Pictured here, Cherrin Kim, along with her classmates, searched the paper for answers.

"I feel successful when students can pick up a Spanish newspaper and understand it," commented Ms. Chotiner. "They are better equipped in our ever-changing global community to navigate their world."
