                                                                                                                                May 2012

 Dear Parents,

Happy Mother’s Day to all of our mothers, grandmothers and Happy mothers day female caretakers. We hope you have an enjoyable day with your families. We will also celebrate another holiday this month--Memorial Day on May 28th. Let’s remember all of the members of our armed forces and those who have sacrificed to keep America free! Thank you!

May is a very busy time here at Woodland and a very exciting one. Our English Language Learning students will be taking the reading, listening and writing portion of the NYSESLAT (New York State English as a Second Language Assessment Test) throughout May. All of our students from kindergarten to fifth grade will be taking the MAP assessments to measure their academic progress from the fall.  Our fourth grade students will finish up the last of the NYS Assessments by taking the science performance at the end of May and the written portion in the beginning of June.

We will be having kindergarten orientation on Friday, June 8thto welcome Welcome to Kindergarten our new kindergarten students and their parents. The students will spend some time in a kindergarten class working on a special project while their parents hear important information from several members of our faculty and staff.

Our PTA’s pre-kindergarten program is coming to an end on May 10th. It has been very exciting to see them come in each Thursday. They have created beautiful crafts to bring home to their families. We have taken them on a tour of the building so they are a little familiar with the layout. They have participated in a fire drill and a lockdown drill and behaved beautifully. We look forward to their arrival in September.

On Tuesday, May 15th, we ask that you exercise your right to vote as the Hicksville Public School Budget is presented to the school community. Also, onExpo Night Tuesday, May 15th, we will have the students vote the theme of next year’s PARP Program. The students will have three choices: “I Did a Read”, “Under the Sea” or a “Harry Potter” theme. The voting will take place in the second part of the gym from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. On that day we will also hold our Expo to display the beautiful work of theWoodlandstudents.

On Thursday, May 17th, Woodland will have its Field Day and parents are Field Day invited to see their children participate in several exciting physical activities during the course of the day. It is a day that everyone at Woodland looks forward to and hopefully we will have great weather.

On May 30th, 31st, and June 1st, our fifth grade students will be taking a three day overnight trip up to Greenkill Environmental Center. This is an exciting program and the students learn many things about the environment and nature. For those students not attending, there will be an exciting program for them here at Woodland.

As the weather gets warmer and you are spending more time outside, Read please do not forget to set aside some time everyday to read with your child. The love of reading is a wonderful gift to give your children and it will open many doors for them.  Remember, if you can read, you can do anything!

                                                  Sincerely,
                                                                                                         Mary F. Hance
