2nd "Souper Bowl" Food Drive
Souper Bowl

Monday, January 30th- Friday, February 3rd

Student Council held a very successful "Souper Bowl" food drive to benefit Island Harvest. Over 350 canned food items, canned soup, and cereal boxes were collected for Island Harvest to distribute to the many soup kitchens and food pantries that they help across Long Island.
Kindergarten-2nd grade classes were the "New England Patriots", and 3rd-5th grade classes were the "New York Giants". It was a close "game" all week, and by halftime on Wednesday, the Patriots had taken the lead. On Friday when the final food items were counted, the Giants were named the winner of the O.C.R. Souper Bowl! To celebrate the success of the food drive, Student Council held a Sprit Day on Friday where they invited everyone to show off their pride for their favorite teams.
Members of Student Council also researched the history and mission behind Island Harvest. They also researched hunger on Long Island, especially how many children on Long Island need the help of Island Harvest throughout the year. The information they found was put onto a Power Point presentation which they presented to their classes.
It was important to Student Council that everyone was aware of where the donated food was going and who it would help. January and February are the hardest months for organizations like Island Harvest to keep their food pantries and soup kitchens fully stocked, the food we were able to donate was greatly appreciated!

Spring

Our March/April Newsletter was distributed to every student at OCR during the last week of March.

In mid-April, we will begin working in the garden which is located near the playground just outside the windows of the school library.  Like last Spring, we look forward to growing some yummy (and healthy) vegetables such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers in the upcoming months.

What are your opinions about Student Council’s Projects?

“These projects are helpful, will be in the future, and have been in the past!”

What projects are you working on?

“I am working on recycling! I am trying to motivate kids in a fun way about this particular area by helping our environment. I hope O.C.R. will recycle by putting their water bottles in the yellow bin.”

What are some ideas you have for our school?

“If you read each day, you get a frog. We could have a Spirit Day at the end of each month. We could have a Fundraiser Day. Kids could dance to karaoke and sell cupcakes. We could have many more ways to raise money through activities on that day.”
