2011—2012 District Goals & Objectives
 
The Board of Education and Administration of the Hicksville Public School District remain committed to providing a quality educational program for all students in a
safe, secure and nurturing environment that will assist them in their own unique way of becoming caring, contributing and responsible citizens. We maintain expectations of excellence and pride, and implement programs and conditions which are designed to enhance the development of each individual’s potential. Our primary commitment is to teaching and learning. These fundamental objectives require a positive climate in which students are given the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and work habits necessary to achieve future success while developing self-esteem and a respect for oneself and others. Our goals for the 2011-2012 school year support this mission.
 
1. Implement new programs, strategies, and staff development designed
to ensure improved student achievement and quality instruction.
  • Staff will utilize research based scientific learning electronic software programs
    which are designed to affect actual physical changes in the brain
    resulting in changes of ability in learning and reading success, to improve
    critical reading skills of students.
  • Through the district Response to Intervention Plan, at-risk students will be
    identified, and research based interventions and strategies will be employed
    with fidelity, progress monitored through ongoing assessment, documentation
    and analysis of data to support student success in the general education
    classroom.
  • High achieving students will be provided enrichment opportunities designed
    to encourage creative thinking and challenge their intellectual potential,
    through the new RISE (Recognizing Individual Student Excellence)
    program.
  • Teachers will expand their knowledge and understanding of teaching and
    learning through staff development workshops on the implementation of the
    new Common Core Standards, use of School Based Inquiry Teams utilizing
    data to drive instruction and the Charlotte Danielson Frameworks Teaching.
  • Develop a plan to improve graduation rates and state assessment performance
    rates for students with disabilities and English Language Learners.
  • Revise the elementary student report card to align to the new State Common
    Core Standards and RISE Program.

2. Finalize and Implement the district Annual Professional Performance
Review plan in accordance with newly revised Education Law Section
3012 (c).

  •  Finalize negotiated aspects of the plan in accordance with guidance from
    the State Education Department and school district attorneys.
  • Share the final plan with the school community and general public.
  • Certify all district evaluators and train all staff in the understanding of the
    plan and its implementation.
  • Effectively monitor the implementation of the plan.
 3. To promote dignity for all students through policies and programs that
sensitize students, parents and staff to the issues of harassment and bullying.
  •  Review and revise district bullying and harassment policies.
  • Provide training for students, staff and parents on these policies.
  • Monitor understanding and compliance with the policy.

4. To enhance participation in community programs and partnerships for
health, safety and emergency preparedness. 

  • Continue participation in community and county emergency preparedness
    programs.
  • Continue to partner with community groups to enhance knowledge and
    understanding of healthy life styles.
  • Seek to partnerships with area businesses to share knowledge and experiences
    with students.

5. To continue the development and implementation of effective fiscal management
strategies to ensure the most efficient use of tax payer funds.

  • Identify the impact of the new Tax Cap legislation under various scenarios
  • Develop a budget plan designed to meet the tax cap restrictions which will
    have the least impact on the quality of education provided to students in the
    district.
  • Continue to monitor spending and seek efficiencies in all areas.
  • Plan for the impact of the Nassau County tax certiorari costs shift to school
    districts.

6. To continue to ensure a safe learning and working environment and protect
the investment of taxpayers in our school facilities.

  • Review and present the findings of the five-year Building Condition
    Survey.
  • Identify in the BCS, necessary capital projects that will ensure the health
    and safety of our school facilities.
  • Continue to implement energy efficient initiatives
    throughout the district.
