Elementary Expos In conjunction with the district's Budget Vote, Hicksville parents were invited to attend the 2008 Elementary Expos, held at the seven neighborhood elementary schools on the evening of May 20th. Throughout each of the buildings, beautiful displays of student art and classroom work were set up for students to share with their visiting parents and siblings. Students shared their current classroom work in a variety of subject areas, projects they had created focusing on themselves and their family history, and drawing, painting and sculpture projects, such as this self-portrait mask, displayed in their school's art room and on hallway walls. Reinforcing the importance of the voting process, this year each school also held its own "student vote" on various topics of interest for K - 5 students including the selection of a school mascot and snack choices for Field Day.
Spring Senior Citizen Luncheon On May 15th, Hicksville High School's Quinlan gymnasium, decorated with a special exhibition of high school art works, served as the venue for this year's Sixteenth Annual Spring Senior Citizen Luncheon. Hicksville High School's National Honor Society members worked as servers for the event, providing guests with delicious hors d'oeuvres during the reception, and a hearty meal and light dessert for the luncheon. Superintendent of Schools Maureen K. Bright and Board of Education President Alesia Sommers kicked off the afternoon with a warm welcome to Hicksville's attending senior citizens. Lively entertainment was provided by the high school's talented music and theater students and included vocal and instrumental solos, the Jazz Ensemble, a cappella singers, and the joyful improvisational comedy of the Hicksville High School Thespians. Each attending senior citizen also received an original work of postcard art created by Hicksville High School's art students. Congratulations to all of the teachers and students who made this wonderful luncheon possible!
Grandparents/Special Persons Day Hicksville's elementary schools recently held Grandparents/Special Persons Day to honor and celebrate the family members of our youngest district students. Grandparents and Special Persons were invited to enjoy a variety of special activities in their grandchild's/children's school including a "Welcome" breakfast and meaningful time spent with them in the classroom. Children introduced their teachers, explained what areas of learning they were currently involved in, and shared special projects they had created for their guests. Thank you to Hicksville's supportive grandparents and special persons for attending this wonderful day of community learning, sharing and fun.
